How the Workshop Works
Woodburning, or pyrography, is a fun way to customize woodcrafts, slow down and try something new. The session starts with practice: your instructor introduces the different marks the woodburning tool can make on a sample piece of wood, which prepares everyone for the real thing. Guests then pick a design, trace it onto their board and get to burning. Past students were relieved to learn they could trace their design rather than freehand it, and loved watching the image settle into the grain of the wood.
The instructor moves around the table offering tips and techniques throughout, and recent guests describe the teaching as patient, kind and engaging, with coordination before the event that was easy and responsive.
Why It Works for Groups
Everyone works side by side on the same project, yet every board comes out different, which makes for easy conversation and a fun show-and-tell at the end. It is one of the more relaxed creative team activities for coworkers or friends, and with a cap of 12 guests it is well suited to team building activities for small groups where every person gets attention from the instructor.
The workshop suits individuals and couples, a date idea, a team outing, a birthday or a bachelorette party. Because each guest leaves with a finished board, it also works as one of the more practical holiday team bonding activities on a year-end calendar, and the board makes a ready-made gift for mom, a partner or a host. For teams that want fun team activities without competition or pressure, it hits the right note.
About the Studio and Your Instructor
The host is a women-owned art classroom and pottery studio in the East Bay that specializes in beginners, with a focus on body awareness, mindfulness and having fun. It started in 2022 as a clay classroom in the owner's garage, grew into a sunny loft in North Oakland, and in July 2026 expanded into an art space in West Berkeley with a pottery studio, a craft area and a wood shop, a short walk from the Aquatic Park.
The owner-operator is a lifelong art educator and audio storyteller who has been captivated by clay in motion since age 13 and has worked with thousands of students since opening the studio. Their teaching style balances support with encouragement to experiment, and it draws on trauma-aware facilitation, neuroscience and open communication. The classroom is introvert-approved and playfully social, curious about different learning styles, and set to a playlist that is both calming and energizing.
