What You Will Make
Every guest starts with an 8 inch ceramic plate and builds a design in two layers. First comes color, brushed on with underglazes; then comes texture, carved back through the surface to create bold lines and patterns. Think juicy peaches for summer, bold blooms for spring or whatever feels inspiring to you that day.
When your plate is finished, the studio handles the kiln firings and final glaze. The result is a hand-painted, carved plate that is microwave and dishwasher safe, so it can go straight into everyday use or hang on a wall as a piece of art.
Instructors demonstrate the easy carving techniques before anyone starts, and there is time to plan a design first, so even first-timers end up with a bold, textured plate they are happy to show off and use at home.
Why It Works for Groups
Painting and carving side by side gives a team a shared project with plenty of room for personal flair, without the pressure of a pottery wheel. It is among the most approachable art team building activities for people who say they are not artistic, and reviewers mention big groups where everyone had a great time and could not wait to come back.
With 6 to 11 guests in a private session, it is one of the friendlier team building activities for small groups and a reliable pick among fun indoor team building activities when the weather turns. Seasonal motifs make it an easy fit for christmas team activities, a spring celebration or a summer send-off, and it is a fresh answer for anyone hunting for creative team building ideas.
About the Studio
This bright, welcoming pottery space in the Inner Richmond is women-owned and was opened in 2023 by a ceramic artist and educator who grew up in her mom's pottery studio. A former elementary school teacher, she built the studio so that people could experience clay in a more approachable way, make something with their hands and step away from the noise for an evening.
Alongside public workshops the studio offers memberships, kids pottery parties and private group events. Private events have a 6-guest minimum, and the studio can host groups of up to about 22 guests with the right staffing, so it suits everything from a small team to a full department.
