What You Will Make
Embroidery is a great way to develop creativity in new and uncharted ways. In this class you draw with thread, creating original artwork stitch by stitch. Your instructor teaches the technique from the ground up, reviews several classic hand embroidery stitches and helps each guest work toward the design they want.
The tactile, meditative and repetitive practice of stitching is described as a way to establish fresh creative pathways. Whether guests want to relax, challenge themselves or express themselves, they leave with a useful artistic skill and a one-of-a-kind piece to wear. A past guest who came with a partner called the class fun and accessible.
Why It Works for Groups
Stitching side by side is quiet enough for real conversation and absorbing enough to switch off from the workday, which makes this one of the more relaxing team building activities a group can bring to its own space. It is equally welcoming to first-timers and to experienced embroiderers who want to tap into the centering practice of embroidery.
With room for 4 to 15 guests per private workshop, it fits a team outing, a birthday, a bachelorette party or a seasonal gathering. Among crafty team building activities it is one where every guest leaves wearing their work, and it is a memorable pick among team building activities for adults who prefer making to competing.
About Your Instructor
Your instructor is the founder of a women-owned, mission-driven arts organization that blends education, consultation and artistry, and a multimedia artist who works in printmaking, painting, fiber arts and sculpture. Her own work layers natural elements with self-created imagery to explore Afro-Indigenous history and traditional art-making practices. As an arts educator she uses an inquiry-based model rooted in process based learning, built on three principles of self-exploration, modeling and guiding, which creates a safe environment for experimentation, risk taking, collaboration and community building. The organization brings classes, workshops and community events to schools, libraries, festivals and other public spaces across the Bay Area.
