Pointed pen calligraphy rewards patience more than talent. Each guest learns how light and heavy pressure create thin and thick strokes, how to keep ink flowing evenly and how to build letterforms one stroke at a time. Reviewers describe a teacher who moves at just the right pace, answers every question and patiently revisits the parts that do not click right away, plus enough supplies and instructions to continue on your own.
Why It Works for Groups
Calligraphy puts everyone at the same starting line, which is what makes it one of the most welcoming crafty team building activities. It is quiet, focused and social at the same time: guests compare letterforms, cheer each other on and leave with a new skill they can keep practicing. Private groups range from 3 to 30 guests, so it works as one of the calmer team building activities for small groups and also scales for a larger team.
The workshop is a great fit for a birthday or a bachelorette party, and it makes a unique gift for her or for mom. As holiday team building activities go, learning to letter your own cards and tags is a skill that pays off every season. For teams looking for creative team bonding activities that feel restful rather than rowdy, it is hard to beat an afternoon with pen and ink.
About Your Instructor
The studio is women-owned and run by a modern calligrapher and artist based in Marin, who is also a Bay Area mom and an ice cream shop owner. Her calligraphy journey began when she created handwritten signs for her first ice cream shop, and what started as a practical need grew into a true passion. Over the years she has taught calligraphy workshops, created wedding calligraphy and offered live on-site engraving at events.
After welcoming a baby in 2022, she found how restorative creativity could be, which inspired her to keep sharing art as both a craft and a form of self-care. In 2025 she took over a local ice cream shop in Larkspur, and today that shop is where she hosts creative workshops that bring people together through art and community. She also brings live calligraphy to weddings and events around the Bay Area.
