What You Will Learn
The class covers the basics of sugar cookies, piping practice with royal icing, how to plan the most effective way to decorate each cookie and the general concepts behind dough and icing. You will see why different icing consistencies matter and practice decorating techniques such as marbling, outlining, wet-on-wet, brush embroidery and painting, depending on the class theme. Or go off script and make your own designs.
No baking is required. The cookies arrive pre-made and the icing is already mixed and colored, so the whole session is about decorating. Guests who already have a little decorating experience are welcome too and can ask about icing mixing and dough spread. You leave with a beautifully boxed cookie bouquet that is perfect for gifting or eating, decorated with designs that are delightfully frightful.
Why Groups Enjoy It
Cookie decorating is relaxed and social. Past guests describe a laid-back class atmosphere where you can still chat with friends, and groups who had a wonderful time with the activity. Because everyone starts from the same blank cookies, it is one of the easiest crafty team building activities to plan, and with private groups of 5 to 14 it fits team building activities for small groups nicely.
It also works for families. Kids from 8 years old are welcome with an adult, who books a separate ticket and decorates alongside them, which makes the class a calm alternative to louder halloween party entertainment.
About the Instructor
The class is taught by the owner of a home-based Oakland sweets business that specializes in custom designed sugar cookies, treats and chocolate bonbons. All of her work is custom designed and made to order, and she believes flavor is just as important as appearance, so the cookies you decorate are baked to taste as good as they look. The business identifies as women-owned.
Her classes are designed for kids 8 and up and adults of all ages, and guests can sign up as individuals, with a friend or with a whole group. At the end of class you also receive a list of the tools used so you can recreate the cookies at home, along with new skills and plenty of fun memories.
