Looking for outdoor team bonding activities that feel more like a party than a drill? The Play Date is a riverside party with a boating twist on the Petaluma River, in the North Bay corner of the Bay Area. For 90 minutes your group shares a mix of boats, boards and water bikes, trades on and off the water and hangs out on its own stretch of dock in downtown Petaluma.
The Play Date is built for groups of 6 to 20 people, and all ages and stages are welcome. No boating experience is needed: the crew helps you pick a variety of craft, sets up your seating area and supports your party both on and off the water. How It Works
Not everyone is on the water at once. Guests trade on and off, try different craft and go back for seconds on their favorites, while others relax and chat on the dock. One friend might start on a water bike, switch to a paddleboard and end in a tandem kayak, while someone else is happy cheering from the dock. You spend the 90 minutes on the dock and on the water as you wish.
The Fleet
The dock is stocked with people-powered craft for every mood. To paddle, there are sit-on-top kayaks in singles and tandems, canoes, stand-up paddleboards and a giant paddleboard that fits four to six adults. To pedal, there are pedal kayaks, stand-up pedalboards, classic floating hydrobikes and sleek water bikes. Rowers can take out classic rowboats, a light guideboat or a roomy gig built for team effort.
Why It Works for Groups
Mixed groups rarely agree on one activity, and that is exactly what this format solves. Thrill seekers can race water bikes, cautious guests can stay on a stable kayak or on the dock, and nobody is stuck waiting in a line. That flexibility makes it one of the more fun outdoor team building activities for offices with very different comfort levels, and a natural choice for birthdays, scout troops and sports teams; the crew has hosted a college basketball team unwinding on the water.
For planners, it is easy outdoor team activities with almost nothing to organize: one rate for each guest, all the equipment and a crew that handles the boats. A dock of your own for 90 minutes also makes this a relaxed setting for outdoor team building events, and a group cap of 20 keeps it among outdoor team building activities for small groups, where everyone gets real time on the water. Few spots in town double as an outdoor team building venue with a whole fleet attached.

- Pets are welcome on most craft with a life vest
- Free parking is available close to the dock
About Your Host
The host is a nonprofit boat rental center floating right in the heart of downtown Petaluma, on docks in the Turning Basin of the Petaluma River. Its mission is simple: put more people on the river in people-powered boats. Alongside rentals it runs lessons, guided paddle tours, summer camps and community events, and it is happy to open up outside regular hours for group outings and special experiences. The nonprofit was founded by local rowers and paddlers, and its crew and board include coaches, racers and instructors who have spent decades on this river.
Plan Your Play Date
Tell the crew a few details about your group, the occasion and your preferred day and time, and they will help you pick the ideal mix of watercraft for a celebration on the river.
